  • South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK), is a country in East Asia

  • Korean is the official language and people use an indigenous writing system called Hangul

  • Its capital and largest city is Seoul with a population of around 10 million. Seoul has developed into a bustling metropolis, acting as the hub for political, economic, social, and cultural matters. The Han river divides the city in two; the northern part of the city is a focal point for culture and history, while the southern part (Gangnam) is well known for its business district

  • The unit of Korean currency is the WON (KRW)

  • Coin denominations are KRW 10, 50, 100, and 500. Bank notes are KRW 1,000, KRW 5,000, KRW 10,000, and KRW 50,000. You can exchange money at airports, banks, and large shopping malls

  • International credit cards are widely accepted at major hotels, department stores and restaurants

Weather

  • The summer period from June to August sees hot and humid weather(23-27°C) and often monsoon rains

  • You should bring lightweight summer clothes and pack an umbrella for the rainy days

Transportation

TAXI

  • You can readily find a taxi on the street. There are three types: general taxis (orange or grey colors), deluxe taxis (black), and van taxis. The basic fare for a general taxi is KRW 3,800 ( USD 3.35)

  • International taxis have been introduced for the convenience of foreign tourists as the drivers can communicate in English. For these taxis, advanced reservation are required. You can book a taxi through the 24-hour call center (t. 1644-2255)

Subway

  • Since the whole city is extensively-networked through nine subway lines, you can easily arrive at your destination (http://seoulmetro.co.kr/en/)

Bus

  • The Seoul bus system is divided into four colors: blue (main line), green (branch route), yellow (circular route), and red (wide area route). Its fare starts from KRW 1,300 (≒ USD 1.14) and charges KRW 100 for every additional 5 km

Tax & Tipping

  • Tipping is not customary in Korea

  • Value-added tax is levied on most goods and services at a standard rate of 10% and is included in the retail price. Thus, you do not necessarily have to prepare for extra charges since it will be included in the bill

Electricity

  • The standard voltage in Korea is 220 volts/60Hz

  • The outlet has two round holes and is the same type used in France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey and many other countries

VISA

All visitors to the Republic of Korea must have a valid passport and visa. Visitors with roundtrip tickets from countries who have a special agreement with Korea may be exempt from the visa requirement, and can stay in Korea visa-free for up to 30 days, or 90 days, depending on the type of agreement between two countries. When uncertain as to the requirements for the entry visa to Korea, please contact the Korean embassy or a consulate as early as possible
